Key Facts

When did Zagreb Pride first take place?

The first parade too place in 2002 in Zagreb’s park Zrinjevac and approximately 300 individuals participated. The parade has suffered from restistance in the early years with peeople trying to throw Molotov cocktails at participants and beating participants up on their return from the Pride Parade. Despite the years of resistance to violence, institutional silence and social non-acceptance, the parade went through year after year.

In 2008, the organizers fought for an Anti-Discrimination Act, a law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. However, intersex people are still not protected by this or any other regulation in Croatia.

In some other ascpects some achievements were made. In 2014, the Law on Life Partnership was passed, which for the first time recognized the existence of families and their legal protection. This Law defines formal and informal life partnership as a community of family life based on equality, mutual respect and dignity.

Also in 2014, the rulebook on the method of collecting medical documentation and determining the conditions and assumptions for changing gender or living in a different gender identity was adopted, which confirms that every person has the right to respect for personal and family life in accordance with their own gender identity.

How many visitors to Zagreb pride?

The 2024 parade drew approximately 10,000 participants. For 2025 I found one number stating 3,000 participants. The 2026 number can be expected to be somewhere in this range.

What is the theme this year?

In 2025 the theme was: Ustani i Ostani (Stand up and Stay). For 2026 no parade theme was announced yet.
